Friday Morning Metal – Manegarm – Hervors Arv

Woo Viking Metal! This time it’s from Manegarm, who took their name from the Norse wolf that’ll eat the moon when Ragnarok happens. That’s pretty brutal if you ask me. The moon’s important! Apparently the band was called Antikrist for a bit, which seems like leaning a little too hard. But they’re Swedish Viking/Folk metal, and they’re pretty great. The song is Hervor’s Arv, which translate’s to “Hervor’s Legacy.” Hervor is a shieldmaiden who apparently stole her dead dad’s cursed sword. That’s pretty badass.

The song kicks off with a driving beat and machine gun guitaring. The vocals are very folk metallic, I could see these guys touring with like Finntroll or Amon Amarth. There’s a solid breakdown at the midpoint, perfect for super dramatic headbanging or yelling HEY while fist pumping. It does lead into a great folky solo before picking up the pace again. Top to bottom, this is a fantastic folk metal track. I will have to go find more!

The video cuts between the band looking real tough and playing in like a barn, and Hervor taking a boat to an island to steal her dead dad’s sword. There are some interspersed visuals, maybe showing what the curse may do, or what she’s going to do in the future? Lotta volleys of arrows and burning structures. It also seems like all slow-mo, maybe the story itself was shorter than the song so they had to stretch it out. But good for Hervor stealing her dead dad’s cursed sword. Hopefully it doesn’t backfire on her. Cursed things aren’t good, you guys.

Friday Morning Metal – Tyr – Axes

Týr, those mighty folk metal masters of the Faroe Islands have a new song and new video out! According to Heri Joensen, “It’s a short face-melting metal song based on a single melodic idea.”

If I’m to understand the video, the dude with the axe got kicked out of his metal band by way of them ripping his black shirt off. So he decided to get vengeance on them for ruining his favorite shirt. With an axe. I’ll need to listen to the lyrics more carefully to know if that’s the case.

The song has some real balls out drumming, with melodic guitars and vocals kind of floating above it. And when the solo finally kicks in, it’s time for the final battle. Lotta hugging in that fight. But the axe man gets vengeance!

Anyway, this song shreds and is 100% Týr. So if you dig viking folk metal, you’re going to have a blast.

Friday Morning Metal – Amon Amarth – Deceiver of the Gods

I already tweeted this, but a buddy of mine has also been on a quest for more metal and decided to give Amon Amarth another look. His review of Deceiver of the Gods, their newest album, is “this will make you want to get drunk and wear a Viking helmet.” And honestly, it’s pretty accurate. This is great battle metal, Viking battle metal, where you want to land a boat on fresh beaches and loot and pillage.

Hell, a couple friends who also watch Vikings on the History Channel described it as “an hour-long Amon Amarth music video. Except when they go to Uppsalla, then it’s a Korpiklaani video.”

So here’s Deceiver of the Gods. Enjoy!

Friday Morning Metal – Tyr – Hold the Heathen Hammer High

My buddy Pat is big into folk power metal. Big vocal harmonies, really clean vocals, and songs about wizards & pagans. The main one we used to rock out to on drives to Taco Bell was Falconer, with their classically trained singer. And the Lord of the Blacksmiths made shields and other things. Great stuff.

Anyway, Tyr is another band he got me listening to, and I think the best way I can describe it is Viking power metal. This is their video for “Hold the Heathen Hammer High,” where they Viking the hell out.
