Friday Morning Metal – Mountain Witch – Back from the Grave

Enjoy some stoner Hamburger metal! This week it’s Mountain Witch’s Back from the Grave. These guys have been playing old timey doom metal since 2008, with themes of Occultism, Horror, and/or Doooooooom. It’s good to know that doom metal can come from everywhere including Hamburg, Germany. They sound like they could’ve opened for Sabbath in the 70s. Also these guys should not be mixed up with Witch Mountain, who played Mayrmoor festival in Radmond in 2025 and are also a doom metal band. I wonder if they’d ever double bill, that’d be pretty rad. Maybe there are bands called Witch Witch and Mountain Mountain so we could have every combination on the bill.

The song kicks off with big guitars setting the tone. It’s not quite as drony as other doom/stoner metal bands, with a solid chord progression going through the verses. Felt almost like a more ominous Iron Butterfly. Vocals don’t kick in until a minute in, letting you soak up the solid riffs. I also dig that the walking bass is up enough in the mix that you can actually hear it. I thiiink there’s some synth going on in there, but Encyclopaedia Metallum doesn’t mention a synth player in the band. Regardless, it gives a good haunting vibe to the song. Like it should be played in a shlocky horror movie! There’s a solid noodly solo toward the end, to finish em off, can’t go wrong with a closing solo.

There’s not much to the video, aside from the band name and song title, but they did add some pops on the screen to make it look like you’re watching a really old film or something. I kept waiting for the hand to move or something, but no dice. Much like I mentioned earlier, if they had set up the video to look like a horror movie that starts with someone dying, getting buried, then coming back from the grave for vengeance on those horny teenagers, it would’ve been wild. Like I Know What You Did Last Summer of Sixty Nine. Or something.

Friday Morning Metal – Gnome – The Gods Are Evil

Happy Friday! Here comes some metal straight out of Belgium, it’s Antwerp’s Gnome playing The Gods Are Evil. These guys are solid stoner rock. If Red Fang were still touring, I would’ve loved to see them tour together. Good vibe match right there. But don’t confuse them with Mr. Gnome, an art rock band from the Cleve. Nor Gnom, the Norwegian folk band. This is just Gnome. I bet they put mayo on their fries while drinking a lambic, probably a kriek.

The song kicks off with some solid riffs and bigass bone shaking drums, before diving into the main melody. There’s a great breakdown halfway through before pivoting to a bunch of nutcrackers shouting HEY among the chorus. I hope when they play it live they bring out people dressed up like nutcrackers for that bit. The song picks up after, with some great guitar hooks. The main riff is catchy as hell, and the big booming drums and bass really fill everything out. Who knew a bunch of puppets could shred this hard.

The video is done like trippy puppets as the band. They did a great job lining up arm motion to the guitars and drums. And the trippy visuals in the background remind me of old Black Sabbath videos, I’m sure that was the intent. Also little puppets telling me the gods are evil is a good way to let me know the gods are evil. If it was a real dude saying it, I’d be pretty doubtful. But have puppets ever lied to you? Oh and can’t forget the puppet party with more than just the band at the end.

Friday Morning Metal – The Sword – Dying Earth

I guess they’re called stoner metal, groove metal, post metal, and all sorts of things. I call them The Sword, and they have a very classic sound in their new album Apocryphon. The main hook in this song is catchy as hell and the solos are fantastic.

Anyway, here’s Dying Earth.

Red Fang – Wires

There’s a new music video from stoner metal masters Red Fang, for their song Wires. It’s pretty awesome to see what kind of stuff these guys come up with for videos. Prehistoric Dog was amazing, and Wires just keeps it up. It’s up on Monster’s website and doesn’t have an embed link so give it a view. Red Fang – Wires Video. And while I’ve got you here, check out Prehistoric Dog.
