Friday Morning Metal – Red Fang – Only Ghosts

NEW RED FANG OMG. Their new album, Only Ghosts, came out today on vinyl and digital and Sportify and everywhere else. I assume there are cassettes of it somewhere. And just like every other Red Fang album, I’ll likely listen to it seven or eight times today.

Like many of their other albums, I run into issues trying to peg them. They’re not really stoner rock, not really groove metal, they dabble in all sorts of themes and styles when they play, alternating between vocal harmonization and growly singing, throwing doom-style breakdowns between garage rock guitar licks, and generally creating a sound that’s equal parts frenetic, elegant, and foreboding.

They’ve let a slow drip of singles out over the past few months, including Shadows, Living in Lye, Cut it Short, and Not for You, so I’ve had a bit of time to get amped up for it. But within the structure of the album, the singles really fit and fill out nicely, letting them bounce from the slower No Air into the power anthem of Shadows. I know there’s going to be a ton of shouting along to that one.

If you already enjoy Red Fang, you’re going to dig the hell out of this album. If you’re new to Red Fang, definitely check out Flies & Shadows, then give the rest of the album a spin. Kinda bummed they’re not playing Bellingham on this tour, but hopefully they come by soon; I’d be stoked to hear these songs live.

Friday Morning Metal – Red Fang – Shadows

More Red Fang! They’ve got a new album coming out Roctober 14th, which I assume will be full of awesome songs and great vocal harmonies because hey why not. Anyway, they’ve released a new video for Shadows, featuring the return of two of the LARPers, but in regular human clothes. The song’s got a great sound to it, still Red Fangy as hell but with them stretching out a bit.

Anyway, enjoy!

Friday Morning Metal – Red Fang – Crows In Swine

There’s a new Red Fang video, for Crows in Swine. It’s a cartoon done by Adam Avilla. I’m not sure who he is, but he makes awesome stuff. Heavy metal cartoon barbarians and four saviors gives off a bit of a Metalocalypse vibe, which is fantastic, because Dethklok is great. There’s also a bit of a Samurai Jack styling, with the main characters lacking outlines & whatnot.

And the song itself, with the mix of frenetic drums and groove-tastic breakdowns, it pairs incredibly well with the animation. Enjoy!

Friday Morning Metal – Red Fang – The Meadows

Red Fang was up in B’ham on Tuesday and proceeded to blow the roof off of the Shakedown. You know something great is happening when a Tuesday night show is sold out and the air in the bar is thick and humid with gross and sweat. Whoever they had working the sound board was a genie; they managed to be both LOUD and incredibly clear, something you rarely hear at metal shows. Usually it’s a wall of sound and drums, but with Red Fang you could hear the vocal harmonizing, the bass, all the stuff that normally gets lost in the wash.

And it’s great that happened, because they put on an amazing live performance. I like to use “does it sound like the album” as a gauge of if a band is really tight; if it sounds way off then their recorded track must have taken a long time and that was the one good one. If it’s dialed in to the CD performance, they know what works and can do it at the drop of a hat, and that’s when you know you’re seeing a kickass band.

Also, there was a dude in a wheelchair crowd surfing. Which was totally amazing.

Anyway, behold, The Meadows, a song/video they did in collaboration with Scion. I guess it’s a car ad, that’s why they’re eating food in slow mo.

Friday Morning Metal – Red Fang – Blood Like Cream

The guys in Red Fang look like the kinda guys I’d see at the Up & Up on a regular basis. And the fact that their video for “Blood Like Cream” has them fighting off zombies who are drinking all the beer just furthers the point.

These guys manage a kind of mix of psychedelic rock, stoner groove metal, big fast songs, and vocal harmonies that few bands really manage properly. Sometimes they sound a bit like Queens of the Stone Age, but at this point I’m willing to claim Queens of the Stone Age are a Red Fang tribute band. Yeah. I went there.

Anyway, here’s Blood Like Cream. Complete with aging hipster Fred Armisen.

Friday Morning Metal – Red Fang – DOEN

RED FANG IS PLAYING THE SHAKEDOWN TONIGHT!!! THIS IS NOT JUST ALL CAPS BECAUSE I’M EXCITED BUT ALSO BECAUSE I’M LISTENING TO THEIR NEW ALBUM AND IT IS LOUD.

Whales and Leeches is the name of the album, and it brings the same great stripped down metal sound Red Fang kicks ass at. A lot of sites have the album up for streaming through soundcloud, most of them not in English, like this kickass German site, METAL HAMMER.

This is the opening track, DOEN, which has all the stuff you want in gritty gnarly metal. Solos, big chest thumping drums, awesome vocals. Oh and apparently they’re selling Red Fang onesies. In case you want your kid to be awesome from birth.

Red Fang – Wires

There’s a new music video from stoner metal masters Red Fang, for their song Wires. It’s pretty awesome to see what kind of stuff these guys come up with for videos. Prehistoric Dog was amazing, and Wires just keeps it up. It’s up on Monster’s website and doesn’t have an embed link so give it a view. Red Fang – Wires Video. And while I’ve got you here, check out Prehistoric Dog.
