Friday Morning Metal -Blitzkrieg – The Spider

Woo more songs about spiders! This time from Blitzkrieg, another NWoBHM band that’s been kicking it since 1980. Coupled with Satan’s new album, and I think Accept had a new album too(?), apparently 2024 is the year for older bands to knock the dust off their stacks and put together shredfests. Also apparently this is the same singer from Satan. Maybe he needs to buy a boat so releasing two albums gets him closer to his dream of sailing the seas in Yeah Buoy.

The song knocks it down the fairway with a good chugga riff coupled with some noodly lead guitaring. I do like the vocals, but I also like Satan the band (don’t wanna get that taken out of context, amirite?), and they fit really well with the band. Though he does sing about the spider’s sting. Maybe he’s thinking of a bee. Maybe there are arachnid bees in the UK and I managed to avoid them, because that seems like nightmare fuel.

The double solo at the 3/4 point is soaring and noodly and all you expect from a good heavy metal track. All in all it’s a solid track, and it’s great to hear bands shredding nearly 50 years going.

I’d be remiss to share a song about spiders without sharing Nekrogoblikon’s magic spider. Because that spider makes your wishes come true!

Friday Morning Metal – Alestorm – Mexico

Tuesday night Alestorm came to the Wild Buffalo, bringing Aether Realm and Nekrogoblikon with them. Along with a giant inflatable duck and a banner a bit too big for the venue, so it ended up looking like LeStorn instead. And LeStorn straight up crushed it!

The thing that was really great was afterward chatting with friends who bartend there. All of them said it was the most fun they’ve had at a show in years. Probably because of the inflatable duck. Or John Goblikon. Either way, I hope this means we’ll get more crazy ass fun metal coming through Bellingham way.

ALSO. Also, Keyboard Maven Christopherrrrrr Bowes & the band let us in on an upcoming track from an upcoming album! It’s called Mexico, and it’s right down here. They’re definitely pulling more dance pop hooks into their music and frankly it’s great. We don’t need to be full on squeedlies and meadlies for a whole album. Sometimes we need to hear synth and poppy beats and something that sounds like in the Navy.

Anyway, behold! Mexico!

Friday Morning Metal – Nekrogoblikon – Powercore – AND MORE!

Hey did you know if you search the youtube for Halloween-related metal, all you get is a bunch of operatic bullshit covers of some song from Nightmare Before Christmas? Yeah I’m not sure what that’s all about. So I decided to hit up some Nekrogoblikon, because Jon Goblikon is awesome. Here’s powercore, which has some of that nu metal singing and stuff, but there’s a goblin! A real ass goblin!

Ooh and one of the related songs is from “A Band of Orcs”! They are very much thrashy deathy metal, which seems appropriate for Orcs. The music is decent enough, though it’s downsampled so horrifically that you can’t make out the low end too much. And it was posted in 2012. Whoopie!

And one more for good measure, since a bunch of my friends are playing that new Lord of the Rings game. And blasting Destroy the Orcs while destroying, well, orcs. Here’s a live one, proving Cam Pipes is worthy of the metal vocalist god pantheon:

And the recorded version which sounds bigger and bolder!
