Friday Morning Metal – Category 7 – Mousetrap

HAPPY FRIDAY ENJOY MOUSETRAP! Category 7 is a supergroup with members from Anthrax, Machine Head, Overkill, and more! Usually supergroups tend to seem overblown, aside from like maybe Velvet Revolver? Remember Velvet Revolver? With Duff McKagan? I wonder if the royalties for that weren’t so great, and that’s why he does announcements at SeaTac airport now.

According to the YouTube description, they’re “Named after the numerical designation for the most powerful windstorms” but I thought Category 5 was the biggest, and storm scientists are hesitant to make categories higher than that. Because at category 5, everything’s flattened. Can’t flatten something more than flat.

The song kicks off with some big bombastic drumming. Donno why, but songs that start with a drum solo are great to me. I do dig some of the transitions where it’s just the bassist noodling a bit. Bassists need more love. People don’t pay enough attention to them. The super frenetic solo halfway through is pretty rad.

It’s a pretty standard performance video. I was really hoping they’d have the game Mousetrap somewhere in here. That’d be great. Also they say they’re using a mousetrap to catch a rat, which is a bad idea. Rats are huge, they won’t get caught by a mousetrap. But they could get maimed. And that’s not good. Then you have an angry, injured rat.

Overall it’s a pretty catchy song, speedy and kinda modern American metal-ly. I look forward to more music from this super group.
