Friday Morning Metal – Bruce Dickinson Afterglow of Ragnarok

Oooh Bruce Dickinson solo stuff, presented in Necrovision!

The song starts off almost like melodic death metal or something. I was half expecting him to start with a growl, even though that’s very much not his vibe. But once it kicks in, it definitely has the Bruce vibes that are part & parcel of his work. Big rock operatic vocals, a solid chorus, the works. There’s a pretty great vocal solo/interlude

The video itself is pretty rad. I guess some dude crosses over between worlds and gets tortured by some occultists? And then Bruce does sorta kung fu toward a dude in a gas mask (I don’t think that was the intent but it was cut that way sorta.) But it’s part of a larger story involving the Mandrake Project which makes me excited to see more of it. Maybe the main dude is a seventh son of a seventh son!

Friday Morning Metal – Iron Maiden – Rock Am Ring 2014

Hey nerds, did you know that Bruce Dickinson was suffering from tongue cancer? Did you know that he just got an MRI and an all-clear to resume being a kickass metal singer. In time for their return to the studio to work on a new album. Yes. There is a new Iron Maiden album in the works.

New Maiden! Last album came out in 2010, and it had some good tracks up in there. I’d like to hear something like Dance of Death again. With the gates. And the walls. Of Montsegur.

So until juicy cuts from the album start popping up on the internet, give this 2-hour set from Rock am Ring a spin. There are SO many people there. That is awesome, and should happen more often. Starting a set with Moonchild is awesome.

Friday Morning Metal – Bruce Dickinson – Faith

Did you know Bruce had a solo thing? He made some interesting music up in there too. Particularly Chemical Wedding. Anyway, I guess he had a band for a bit called Skunkworks, that toured and whatnot, but they broke up after their tour. And so you get to hear one of the songs!

The album/tour came out in 1996, and definitely feels like it’s from that era. The guitars are a bit more distorted and the bass is a little funkier. It sounds like a prog band got freaky with an alt-roc jam band. But it’s pretty cool to hear Bruce’s vocals on top of this stuff.

And then there’s just this weird stuff from the second disc:
